The “Garden Bridge” was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, and was a proposal to improve pedestrian links across the river, and to create a link between northern and southern London, across the River Thames. This bridge would also help to preserve many indigenous plant species of the river’s edge. Since the restoration of the South Bank, the district has flourished from it’s art galleries, music halls and outdoor entertainment. However, the North Bank is not as popular, this bridge’s intention was to help naturally grow and improve the popularity of the North Bank. I believe this precedent is fascinating in the way it responds to the surrounding context but also the needs of another context, and aspires to improve it by connecting a flourishing district to a declining one.
